poison ivy Poison ivy tends to grow on the edge of other vegetation - where a field and forest meet or along a road or path. In an open field, grass will usually overgrow poison ivy and deep in a forest, it doesn't get enough sunlight.

New leaves appear reddish and shiney, then become solid green, and finally fade to orange and red in the fall. It is dangerous in all phases. The oil from the sap and on the leaves causes a blistering rash that can begin 10 to 30 minutes after contact and can last two weeks.

If you believe you've come in contact with poison ivy, immediately wash the effected area with soap and cool water. If the rash develops, there are many medical creams and ointments available, but a severe rash requires a doctor visit.

To avoid poison ivy:
  • Keep your eyes open and stay alert.
  • Avoid areas where it grows - stay on the trail.
  • Wear long pants and closed shoew rather than shorts or sandles.
  • Learn to recognize it.
  • Wash clothes and take a shower after a hike - to wash away anything that you may not even be aware of.
